You've probably heard every stylist bang on about it at your appointments. You've definitely seen the bottle all over your feed. But what does a bond builder actually do? Short version: it helps your hair hold on to its strength, especially after lightening, colour or a lot of heat. It's also what lets me take your hair as bright as possible without it snapping off in the wind.
It's a big part of why you can go lighter now and still have hair that feels soft (and not like straw).
What's actually going on in there
Every strand is held together on the inside by tiny bonds. They're what give your hair its strength, stretch and bounce. Lightener, colour and hot tools break some of them, and that's when hair starts feeling dry, snapping or losing its shine.
A bond builder gets inside the strand and helps reconnect the broken ones, what we'd call disulfide bonds. The surface looks better too, but the real work happens where you can't see it.
In the studio and at home
In the chair, I'll often mix a bond builder right into the lightener. It protects your hair while the colour does its thing, so we can go brighter with a lot more confidence.
At home, it's all about the long-term plan. A weekly treatment keeps your hair strong between appointments, and the more consistent you are, the more you'll notice it.
Do I add a bond builder to every lightening service? Every single one. It's built into all my prices, for everyone, so there's no add-on and no upsell. That way I can keep your hair strong whatever service you're in for. (It also just makes the whole appointment better value.)
Signs your hair is asking for one
Stretchy when it's wet? Snapping when you brush it? Lost its shine even though you're doing everything right? That's your hair asking for backup. And if you're blonde, colour often or heat-style most days, it's just a smart habit.

What I reach for
Olaplex is the one everyone knows, and the at-home steps slot easily into your wash routine. Want something quicker? Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 5-Minute Liquid Mask does its job in the shower in about the time it takes to shave your legs 😂For a leave-in, the Night & Day Serum from the same line keeps working while you get on with your day.
Think of a bond builder as looking after the investment you've made in your colour. A little each week is how you get high-impact blonde that's still healthy months later, and hair you don't need to get done every 25 seconds.
